Communication and Leadership Award
Dr. Sidney Goss is a professor of sociology at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT). In his 30-plus years at this institution he has held numerous positions including Dean, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, Department Chair and Director.
Dr. Goss holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and Masters Degrees in Education and in Sociology. In addition to his positions at SDSMT, he was the founding Executive Director of the Journey Museum, and spent a year as Regents’ Fellow with the South Dakota Board of Regents. Dr Goss is active in numerous organizations, currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Mount Rushmore Society, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Northern Plains Eye Foundation. His past service includes Chairman of the Rapid City Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, Chairman of the Rapid City Public School Foundation, President of the South Dakota Humanities Council, Vice Chairman of the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce and President of the Rapid City Rotary Club. He recently chaired the Black Hills United Way fund drive, and has chaired the Children’s Miracle Network Board of Directors as well. His numerous public appearances include thirteen years as co-host of the Children’s Miracle Network Broadcast, and 9 years as the emcee for the Mount Rushmore Fireworks celebration, hosting 30,000 attendees each July. His socio-economic impact testimony at the recent Department of Defense BRAC Commission was cited by Governor Rounds as instrumental in the preservation of nearby Ellsworth Air Force Base.
A popular professor and speaker, Dr. Goss has received numerous awards and citations including last year’s “President’s Award for Outstanding Professor.”
